GRASSROOTS ELECTION PROTECTION & CAMPAIGNING TO 2024
Our elections need to be protected and our progressive campaigns need grassroots support, exclusive of the party system.
In this GREEGREE zoom #121 we lay out a template for our work through November, 2024 (and maybe beyond).
We look first at a list of 20+ core issues dealing with election protection that will be in varying degrees the upcoming focus of our work. They are listed below.
We are then joined by RAY MCCLENDON of the Georgia NAACP, who explains the nitty-gritty importance of grassroots “relational” campaigning with “democracy centers” for progressive candidates everywhere.
Ray focusses in particular on Georgia, where the recent GEORGIA MIRACLE has helped swing control of the United States Senate, among much more.
HOWIE HAWKINS of the Green Party lays out the details of Ranked Choice Voting, which can constitute a major leap forward for true democracy.
RAY LUTZ of Audit USA tells us how audits can play a crucial role along with hand-marked paper ballots in guaranteeing accurate vote counts.
Below is the partial list of key issues that are core to protecting free, fair, reliable and accurate elections.
Along with safe energy, this will be the core of our work heading toward 2024.
SOME KEY ISSUES:
X Hand-marked digitally-scanned paper ballots must be made universally available. Scanners must be standardized, with transparent source coding and standardized auditing procedures.
X Paper ballots will be mailed to all eligible voters. Ballots returnable by mail, widely available drop boxes, &/or in person or by family members or authorized agents at easily accessible election centers.
X No photo ID or other potentially discriminatory requirements for ballots.
X No mass challenges allowed against duly registered voters.
X Ex-felons are eligible to vote.
X The Voting Rights Act must be re-instated.
X Allow same day voter registration, and registration at schools, Motor Vehicle agencies, social security offices, etc.
X 30 days of early voting, including Saturdays, Sunday & holidays (except Thanksgiving).
X Folding chairs, porta-potties, food & water, protective cover against bad weather must be provided at precincts where long lines accumulate and waits exceed fifteen minutes.
X Citizens United must be repealed.
X No corporate contributions to partisan campaigns or parties, with PACs disallowed.
X Strict limits on personal contributions to partisan campaigns
X No weapons allowed within a half-mile of any polling station.
X Gerrymandering must be abolished; Congressional and state legislative districts must be drawn by non-partisan commissions, with California as a model.
X Statewide referenda shall be made legal and binding in all states, to be decided by simple majority.
X Institute ranked choice voting wherever possible.
X. Lower the voting age to 16.
X Abolish the Electoral College
X Move money donated to progressive candidates away from media advertising, toward grassroots relational campaigning.—————————————–

CELEBRATING GRASSROOTS VICTORY IN GEORGIA!
We are joined on GreeGree #120 by ANDREA MILLER of the Center for Common Ground and RAY MCCLENDON of the Georgia NAACP.
They are chief architects of the astounding grassroots victories in Georgia 2020-2 for the US Senate seat now held by RAPHAEL WARNOCK.
These electoral landmarks turned on turnouts organized without help from the Democratic Party, which spent some $50 million on media advertising.
Much of that money lines the pockets of party consultants who are highly paid and often make kick-backs on the ads they place.
Yet as we hear from SUE DORFMAN, on-the-ground campaigns were forced to beg even for simple yard signs and door hangers.
We further hear from reporter STEVE ROSENFELD with various reports from around the US on the complexities of our tortured democracy.

In tandem they explain the nuts and bolts of grassroots campaigning, including the Center for Common Ground’s computerized phone banking, which has generated tens of thousands of calls to get out of the vote.
As we know, Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock has won re-election by a slim margin…generated in significant part by the kinds of grassroots organizing engineered by the Center for Common Ground and NAACP.
Though we didn’t know at the time what the actual outcome would be, the grassroots campaigning the underlay this victory must stand as a template for what must be done to save the nation from fascism in 2024.
Toward the end of this monumental hour, we hear from TATANKA BRICCA and DAVE ROSENFELD on the campaign in California to save rooftop solar and stop the bailout of the insane Diablo Canyon nuke.
As we all know, Diablo is America’s #1 apocalypse in progress. Rooftop solar generates more power in California than do the Diablo Nukes. The choice for the future is obvlous. NO NUKES!

Part 1: ELECTION MADNESS IN GA AND ARIZONA, & THE SANITY OF SCANNED PAPER BALLOTS
On GREEGREE zoom #118 we begin with a “How To” session from ANDREA MILLER of the Center for Common Ground and RAY MCCLENDON of the Georgia NAACP.
Ray and Andrea explain how citizens from inside Georgia and around the US can plug into help turn out the vote in the upcoming December 6 US Senate runoff in Georgia.
This historic election will determine whether the US Senate will be 50-50 or 51-49, and will have enormous impacts on the fate of the nation.
JOHN BRAKEY of Audit USA then updates us on the “Lake Effect” in Arizona, in which a MAGA gubernatorial candidate is finally forced to concede defeat.
We also discuss major electoral studies confirming that the fairest and most reliable way to conduct a vote is with hand marked paper ballots that are then scanned.
The scanners provide the initial—very fast—results, which can then be checked with risk limiting audits and, if necessary, actual hand counting.
The election protection movement has fought for this outcome since Ohio 2004.
With confirmation from the Brennan Center and others, we now have a national “gold standard” for our democratic future.
Brakey tells of the new legislation likely to get bi-partisan approval for precisely this method from the Arizona legislature.
Hopefully this will lead to a national standard that will help further American democracy.
